🤔 BEST TIME TO TRAVEL TO MADRID
OCTOBER: If you want to visit Madrid, we recommend doing so primarily during two periods: September and October, or April and May. These months offer a mild and very pleasant climate, and the cold is not yet excessive.
✔ WHAT TO DO IN MADRID
In Madrid you'll find good energy, which translates into a simple message: here, they know how to live. Its calling card includes impressive museums, interesting architecture, endless nightlife and cultural offerings, and excellent restaurants and tapas bars. Get lost in its neighborhoods—every corner is completely different!
🌮 YOU CAN'T LEAVE MADRID WITHOUT TRYING IT
In Madrid, you'll find many familiar smells, like the aroma of fried food, used in many specialties, such as the calamari sandwich. Some of its most classic dishes include cocido madrileño (Madrid stew), callos (tripe stew), gallinejas (fried chicken giblets), rosca madrileña (a ring-shaped pastry), and snails. And if you're still craving something sweet, try torrijas (French toast) or churros with hot chocolate. We recommend stopping at the San Miguel Market to experience its more innovative cuisine.
👁🗨 CURIOSITIES OF MADRID
Sundays in Madrid are synonymous with El Rastro, one of Spain's most popular and unique flea markets. But do you know why it's called that? There used to be numerous slaughterhouses in the area, and it wasn't uncommon to find traces of animal blood in the streets.
😎 MISS WOOD'S TIP
Did you know there's an Egyptian temple in Madrid? We're talking about the Temple of Debod, a gift from the Egyptian government to thank Spain for its help and commitment to saving the Nubian temples. The sunset from there is one of the best in the capital.
5 MUST-SEE PLACES IN MADRID
1. Prado Museum: Welcome to one of the world's most important art museums. The paintings in the collection offer a glimpse into the historical whims of the once grand and imperial Spanish soul. Enjoy the drama of Velázquez, Goya's Black Paintings, and the many works of art from across Europe.
2. Retiro Park: The fabulous Retiro Park has nothing to envy in the most beautiful parks in Europe. Full of marble monuments, gardens, the occasional elegant building, and abundant vegetation, it is quiet during the week but comes alive on weekends.
3. ROYAL PALACE: One can almost imagine the light in the eyes of Philip V, the first Bourbon king, when the Alcázar burned down in 1734 in the heart of Madrid. His plan was to build a building that would put all its European counterparts to shame. The 2,800-room palace never reached that scale, but it remains a stunningly beautiful and undeniably elegant Italian Neoclassical monument.
4. HERMITAGE OF SAN ANTONIO DE LA FLORIDA: Completed in 2005, it is also known as Goya's pantheon (his remains rest here). But what is truly interesting are the frescoes that decorate it, painted by Goya himself in 1798 at the behest of Charles IV. It is one of the few places where the artist's masterpieces can be seen in their original setting.
5. SAN LORENZO DEL ESCORIAL: This former royal retreat, home to the majestic (and UNESCO World Heritage Site) Monastery and Palace of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, is one of the best day trips you can take from Madrid. Built by order of King Philip II in the 16th century as a royal palace and mausoleum for his parents, Charles I and Isabella, it is an extraordinary place, brimming with art and surrounded by magnificent gardens.
