🤔 BEST TIME TO TRAVEL TO TARIFA
SEPTEMBER: If you prefer to avoid crowds, we recommend visiting in September, although the best time to visit Tarifa is between May and October. Its Mediterranean climate brings hot, dry summers (average 26°C) and mild winters (15°C). The water temperature ranges from 17°C to 25°C.
✔ WHAT TO DO IN TARIFA
Tarifa is world-renowned for its friendly atmosphere and as a mecca for surfing and windsurfing. It's the closest town to the African continent and the point where the waters of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic meet. Its privileged location made it highly coveted by different civilizations throughout the centuries, leaving behind prehistoric remains, Phoenician vestiges, Roman ruins, and medieval castles. But it's not just surfers who ride these waters; Tarifa's waters are also one of the best places in Europe for whale watching: whales, dolphins, sperm whales, and pilot whales.
🌮 YOU CAN'T LEAVE TARIFA WITHOUT TRYING IT
Tarifa's gastronomy is rich and varied, offering visitors a wide range of options, from full meals to tapas. Fresh fish from the area or imported from Morocco, along with locally sourced beef, are the cornerstones of this highly regarded cuisine. While some restaurants serve traditional dishes like tagarnina stew, cabbage, puchero (a type of Madrid stew), and tripe, others offer more contemporary cuisine, such as Italian, Mexican, or Moroccan. Reservations are highly recommended at one of the restaurants in the Strait Natural Park to enjoy a delicious meal while taking in one of Spain's most beautiful landscapes.
👁🗨 CURIOSITIES OF TARIFA
Tarifa is the city in the world with the greatest concentration of cave art. Some 66 caves make up its heritage, although it wasn't given much importance until a German, Lothar Bergmann, came to publicize them and fought for their preservation. The most famous is La Cueva del Moro (The Moor's Cave), belonging to the so-called Southern Art style. It is over 20,000 years old.
😎 MISS WOOD'S TIP
Every so often, the tuna fishing season kicks off. There are few places where you can enjoy this species as much and as well as in the Tarifa area and along the entire Cádiz coast. If your visit doesn't coincide with this event, be sure to stop by the Tarifa Cannery shop (they also have an online store) and take home the best souvenirs: jars and packs of tuna, mackerel, bonito, and assorted boxes.
5 MUST-SEE PLACES IN TARIFA
1. GUZMÁN EL BUENO CASTLE: One of the best-preserved castles in Andalusia. It was built in 960 by Caliph Abd-ar-Rahman III. However, it bears the name of the Christian ruler Guzmán El Bueno, who defended the city from the Muslim invasion in 1294, sacrificing the life of his own son. From its walls, you can enjoy spectacular views of Africa.
2. BAELO CLAUDIA RUINS: Located in Bolonia, 20km from Tarifa, the ruins of Baelo Claudia are an important Roman vestige in Spain, whose period of flourishing dates back to the 1st century AD. There you will discover the ruins of a Roman theater and an old basilica, along with several workshops where salted fish and a delicious sauce called garum were produced.
3. PLAYA CHICA: The last beach on the Mediterranean Sea. It has crystal-clear, somewhat or quite cold waters. Especially recommended for diving, and in winter, windsurfing.
4. Bolonia Beach: Bolonia Beach is one of the best beaches in Spain. At the far right end of Bolonia Beach, you'll find a gigantic dune, which you can climb to admire a spectacular landscape. It's very close to the Baelo Claudia ruins.
5. STRAIT VIEWPOINT: From an exceptional vantage point, the Strait Viewpoint, you can see part of the rugged Cádiz coastline and, in the distance, the first mountains of Africa. From here you will feel as if you are between two continents at a very short distance; from Punta de Oliveros in Spain to Punta Cires in Morocco there are only 7.2 nautical miles, or 14.4 kilometers.
